Rob Butters, PhD, LCSW, is the founder and clinical director at LifeMatters Counseling & Health Center. Prior to returning to full time clinical work in 2020, Dr. Butters was in academia where he served as an Assistant Professor (2008-2020) and Director of the Utah Criminal Justice Center (2011-2018) at the University of Utah. He completed over 30 research studies with grant funding of over 5 million dollars. Dr. Butters has worked in the social work field for nearly 30 years and has been a licensed clinician for the last 20 years. Dr. Butters obtained his BS in Psychology (1996), Master of Social Work (2000), and PhD in Social Work (2010) from the University of Utah. He has published research on mental health practice, domestic violence, sexual assault, pornography, and criminal justice. His research has been published in Nature Human Behavior, Patient Education and Counseling, Criminal Justice Policy Review, The Journal of Interpersonal Violence, Trauma Violence & Abuse, The Journal of Social Work, The Journal of Religion and Health, and the Journal of Forensic Social Work. In my clinical practice I utilize a number of evidence-based practices to maximize the effectiveness of psychotherapy including cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, acceptance and commitment therapy, and trauma focused CBT. I have advanced training in treating addictions, compulsive sexual behaviors, domestic violence, couples counseling, and divorce and co-parenting issues. I have worked closely with the legal and court systems in various capacities and am an expert in helping clients navigate these systems.
I grew up in Utah and am the father of four amazing children and silver lab named Ellie. I enjoy recreating in the amazing mountains and deserts in and around Utah camping, hiking, biking, fly-fishing, kayaking and SUPing. I am passionate about protecting our environment and incorporate environmentally friendly practices into all aspects of my life. I also enjoy gardening, swimming, reading, podcasts, and spending time with close friends and family.
